| well, it SOUNDS like a good idea...as long as you plan it right. just remember apartments have different lease terms. it might be a big hassle to move everything around in my opinion...but, if i were you i'd be doing the same thing you are, despite it being a hassle :) | |

| yeah and the navy wont pay to move your stuff to SD then to Virginia.... so remember that one too.. moving will be out of your pocket... if he was going for 6 months or more then they would pay for it all.. but since its only 3 months they wont.. | |

| my husband, phil, said this, too: it's a bad idea because the way it sounds to him is that his orders are to va and he has temporary orders to go to school out here.....soooo since his orders are to va then you're only going to get va BAH so you'll only afford a tiny ca apartment with va BAH and then possibly still have to pay out of pocket. he also said that they'll probably end up putting him up in the barracks because the navy doesn't want to pay for him to live here for only 3 months. and then i agree with what lovinmysailor said....you have to pay to move across country TWICE.
i had a friend that the navy did this to, too. her husband's orders were to ga but he had to go to school somewhere else on the east coast and the navy wouldn't let her go with since it was only for a couple months (like, 3) so he helped with the move to ga but she stayed there for a couple months by herself.
good luck trying though, i know what it's like being away from your husband and also being away from your family so i know you want to spend time with them....but the navy will only allow certain things. and just think how much money you will be using to move from fl to ca to va when you could just move to va and save up the money you would have been spending to fly home and spend time with your family or get nice stuff for your new house!
i hope you choose wisely so you don't end up broke in the long run. good luck with everything, let us know if you need anything!

| they've already given him money for it and his leave. apartments near navy bases have themilitary clause which means when he gets his orders, we can leave. that's what we did here. it's all planned :] |

| yes most apartment complexes to have military clauses.. but the BAH for VA is ALOT less than the cost of apartments in CA... cali is so expensive... and i am pretty sure he will have live in the barracks because its only 3 months.... and they wont pay for you to move your stuff to cali because its less than 6 months... so it will be out of pocket for one move... and moving is expensive... your VA BAH is going to be less than your BAH here in FL... i know that because i live here in FL and i lived in VA...
when this happened to my ex husband i went with him to go to school too and we ended up putting ourselves in debt and i ended up having to go back with my family because of what we did we didnt have the money to keep me there!! We didnt realize all the things that i know now.. we were both new to the navy... he had only been in 3 years and hadnt really ever had to deal with it... we thought that when they gave him the money that it was for us to move to his school and then to the PDS but it ended up not being that way.. and then we had to pay out of pocket for the u-haul and the boxes to pack our stuff up and then we couldnt afford our rent because our BAH was for our PDS and we were somewhere that was ALOT more expensive... and so we screwed our credit, put ourselves in debt, because of 3 months and it turned out i had less time with him because i had to go back home to my family... and then from the debt we kept fighting over everythin. and then things escalated and thats how we ended up in divorce that and he had an affair on me... oh it was just bad
and because of what happened to me is the only reason i am still talking about so i am sorry if i offend you.. i would hate for you guys go in debt... its a horrible situation

| i am pretty sure they will give you bah for wherever you are living...for instance when dh went to boot camp, we were living in san antonio but i went to california to stay with my parents while he was gone and they gave me bah for california. i think its just a matter of keeping your addresses updated and all that. but you sound like you got it all figured out so im sure youll take care of it! | |

| i think that happened just because your husband didn't have a permanent duty station yet, rachel.
they give you bah for whatever your duty station is. even if you're going to be living in ca for 2-3 months, you'll only get va bah since that's going to be his permanent duty station.....even though he's at a temporary duty station he doesn't get that pay. our apartment is $1580/month which is WAY over va bah.
yes, they give you money to move and you should start getting va's bah pretty much right away, too.
not to sound rude or overly dramatic but you can do what you want but if something bad happens, a couple of us will be the ones here saying "i told you so" because we're only trying to give advice from what we know and have learned along the way.
i hope in some sense that i along with lovinmysailor are wrong though and everything works out for you. good luck!

| Let her do what she wants to do...if she wants to go into debt and move all over the country, then its up to her.If she wants to get crappy BAH rates and try to afford a CA aptartment for 3 months that is up to her.(Our BAH at E04 is 1242 for VA BEACH...that will barely touch rent in CA...whatever.)
Whatever. | |

| Oh yeah I agree with Shannon too. You can't tell someone what to do after they've made up their mind. But you should think about what happens in the long run... | |
