Yeah DH is pretty weird about stuff.I dont wear Navy stuff in public unless I know Im on base.I cant have anything Navy on the car.

My Dad took me to protest the KKK when I was in 6th grade, takes me to briefings at embassies, and he worked under 2 Presidents. So we know the FBI has files on our family. We dont know how much but it exists. My stepmom lobbies on Capitol Hill too.My FIL also has security clearances to check on my husband's ship too.One of my civilian friends who has SCARY security clearances told me matter a factly that the military knows who I am and is aware of my past...haha.GREAT.

I dont think it is something for the average person to worry but if your husband is considering being high ranked or going SEAL or something like Delta Force, then dot your i's and cross your t's.

wow! yah our families arent nearly as important as yours lol. the only thing he really had to worry about was getting in trouble when he was younger, but i guess that didnt bother them too much. i definitely dont want to give them any reason to question us/him though so i try to stay in line lol. im not even registered to vote! hah, such a horrible military wife.

hahahahaha you should register! they have to remain apolitical but you can speak up! One of the guys convicted of Watergate, and as a felon cannot own guns but always says of his wife...'She has a great gun collection!' Its like that

I just try my best to abide by OPSEC and dont make a commotion.I lay pretty low now.Plus this is Norfolk...trust me there is not much to get bent outta shape about.

haha thats funny about the watergate guy. yah i guess norfolk isnt too crazy. i dont know, i mean political science was by far my favorite subject in school so i really love the whole process and everything but im a firm believer in one vote doesnt make a difference ( i know i know, but take it easy one me) and because i dont vote i try not to complain or get too caught up in stuff. i just feel like if i dont vote, i kinda sacrifice my right to complain lol. im one of those dumb people that is pretty happy being ignorant lol. when scott first decided he wanted to do intel, he was like are you gonna be ok that im not going to be able to tell you stuff? and i was just like pfft, heck yes, i dont WANT you to tell me anything!

hahaha yeah.i totally understand.sometimes i just wanna stop reading crap on blogs cause it upsets me so much.

I can tell you in general since moving from NoVA my blood pressure has dropped IMMENSELY.Which tells you something of the stress of that area.

I know when people were protesting the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq here...it was like 10 people. So it was nice to not have to deal with the crowds like in DC for protests of ANYTHING.

It is nice to be in an area where people arent confrontational really to your way of life.In DC,we always have to be careful because people will drill us on our view points and we have to break down stupid ignorance of civlians.(Like...my husband doesnt decide who to invade, the suits in DC who sit in their comfy homes and get good paychecks do...the military is just the physical extension of the foreign policy.)

oh man! i totally agree. this is one thing that i really feel strongly about. like ok, i understand you dont agree with the war. i mean i think in a perfect situation most people would never want to go to war, but dont take that out on the troops! the fact of the matter is that they enlist in the military because they are willing to sacrifice their lives for the freedom of this country. period. end of story. everyone should have unending appreciation for that (in my humble opinion lol). people think that the troops have a choice about whether they want to go to war or not. i dont think civilians really understand. but yah ill be watching the news or reading cnn or something like that and see the protests in dc and im like oh wait...i live there! lol, its kinda surreal for us. even in my small town in california people would line up on the busy street corners with signs and stuff about the war and bush and its like pfft thats not really productive and i highly doubt 30 people standing in hemet, ca are going to really raise awareness about the issue, go home. but thats just me. some people are alot more passionate about their beliefs.

yeaaaaaaah i dont really protest anymore...unless someone is asking for a beatdown...haha.I am going to do the Freedom Walk here in Norfolk on the anniversary of 9/11.My stepmom lost a member of her church from the attack on the Pentagon. And I come from a firefighter family...soooo 9/11 is a big deal to me.I remember how scary it was that day and it felt like the end of the world was happening.

I have theories and theories to talk you to death on...I think when society switched after Vietnam was when things for troop support went downhill. There was a time when if you attened Yale or Harvard it was expected to serve in the military. Now they're massive schools of anti America and anti military thought. Many congress and senators either served in the military and/or had sons serving.I think McCain and another gentleman in the senate are the only senators with active duty children. To me...that is important. You're deciding the fates of MANY families and yet you havent served or you have nothing in this tangible.

Like I said...I have theories :D There is a good book called AWOL: The unexcused absence of our upper class in the military-how it hurts our country by Katherine Roth-Douqet.She is actually a MilSpouse and she discusses her complete oblivious views on the military until she started dating her husband.Gives tons of stats and history (like the above mentioned Yale/Harvard was breeding ground for military personel in bygone days.) Good read.

ohhh la la, i will have to check out that book for sure. i love reading. haha i know, this thread is no longer at all what it started out to be. i feel the same way about having military experience though. i thought it was a requirement to have military experience in order to run for president, but yah i found out different. i mean if youre going to be our commander in chief, at least have SOME experience. come on. especially when we're at war. its kinda scary to think of letting someone run the most powerful country in the world when we're at war and they have no military experience. as far as 9/11 i am really looking forward to being here in dc for that. my hubby works at the pentagon and he was told they have a service for the families every year so i think we're going to go to that. when we found out his orders, i was like hmmm, i wonder how close you'll be to where the plane hit. and he said, well i didnt really want to tell you this, but the plane hit the actual compartment that i will be working in. i guess like almost all of the people that were killed that were actually in the pentagon, not on the plane, were navy. so thats pretty crazy. it pretty much hit home like never before. i mean i was in california getting ready to go to school when it happened. i was upset, but it kinda seemed like a world away.

That sounds like a really interesting book! OMG.. I jsut got an idea!

We should start a book club but instead of buying all the books, we should get one copy and then mail it to the next person, sort of like the sisterhood of the traveling pants, but it'll be books! lol

Cool! I checked it out at the library and only got halfway through. There is also a USMC Dad that cowrote it with her.He also had children who attended Ivey League schools, and when his son enlisted in the USMC he was mortified. Then he actually took a step back, has realised what great appreciation he has for the USMC now,and his son volunteering for service. He and his son wrote a book about the Marines.I'll have to find it.

Here it is...Keeping Faith by Frank Schaeffer and John Schaeffer

http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=0786713089

Synopsis
In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a bohemian novelist living in “Volvo driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the United States Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the Marine Corps: from being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. From Frank’s realization that among his fellow soccer dads “the very words ‘boot camp’ were pejorative, conjuring up ‘troubled youths at risk’” (“’But aren’t they all terribly southern?’ asked one parent”) to John’s learning that “the Marine next to you is more important than you are,” Keeping Faith — a New York Times bestseller — is a fascinating and personal examination of issues of class, duty, and patriotism. The fact that John is currently serving in the Middle East only adds to the impact of this wonderfully written, timely, and moving human interest story.

oooohhhh that one also sounds riveting. i cant pretend like i dont relate though. not that i ever thought badly of people who serve in the military (they have always had my deepest respect) but i NEVER ever in a million years thought my hubby would enlist. i always thought it was for kids right out of highschool that didnt know what they wanted to do with their lives so im definitely learning too. i am sending the book to kim after i read it...i'll let her know that you never finished it so maybe she can send it to you when shes done. thanks for all the hot tips!
